Beglika

Beglika is located in Batak mountain, part of the Rhodope Mountains. Batak mountain is included in the common European data base of places with highest nature protection's importance in Europe. Between the boundaries of Batak mountain there are 2 preserves: "Mantaritsa" and "Beglika", as well as the following protected areas: "Kleptuza", "Chatama", "Lepenitsa", "Batlaboaz", "Samodivska poliana", "Meandres of Ribna reka (Fish river").


 

 

In the reserve places of Beglika are found 7 species of glacial relicts; 112 species are protected under the Law on the biological diversity; 19 species are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria; 8 species are in danger by world scale; 50 species are in danger by European scale - included in the Birds and Habitats Directives ; 104 species are included in different appendices of the Bern Convention; 35 species are in the CITES; 53 species are in Еmerald.

Beglika fest 2009 will take place in the protected area of Batlaboaz. It was declared as a reserve place in 1984 with the aim: "to preserve the beauty of the countryside for rest and tourism".
 


 

Beglika countryside had taken its name from the tax "Beglic", that local people - "juruci" paid to the official athority of the Ottoman empire. At this place "jurucite" gathered their huge herds and part of them was set aside to pay this tax. Almost the whole area is covered by spruce and pine trees, alternating with spacious pastures.
 

Dam lake Big Beglik (known in the past as "Vasil Kolarov") was built in the year 1948 and is the first artificial lake of the cascade Batak`s hydroelectric scheme. It is located at 1500 m above the sea level and gathers the waters of the rivers Cherno dere, Jalto dere and through underground channels and pump installation is connected with two other dams: Shiroka Poliana and Toshkov Chark.
 

The neighbouring area of the dam abounds in picturesque inlets, surrounded by thick woods and green, succulent pastures. In the middle of the lake there are two islands, covered with pine trees. In order to protect these attractive for rest and tourism places in the area of Big Beglik dam, man has declared the Protected areas "Samodivska poliana","Chatama" and "Batlaboaz".
